Grounded in the development and embodiment of character, Hannah Wheeler imbues her roles with emotion and depth. Her diverse performance repertoire has provided Hannah with the ability to grow into a true operatic storyteller. With the freedom to fully bury herself in the roles she portrays, she is able to captivate audiences with a fully immersive and engaging experience.
Hannah’s wide range of solo, choral and operatic roles has only grown throughout the years. Last season she returned to Opera for the Young in their production of Beauty and the Beast as Tooty Fruity, as well as making her role debut as Hansel in Lyric Opera of the North's adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. Her previous roles include Assan in The Consul with Angels Vocal Art where she also covered The Secretary and sang chorus for Tosca and The Consul, Dr. Bartola in an adaptation of The Barber of Seville with Opera for the Young, Madame and the Fairy Godmother in Opera for the Young’s Cinderella, Third Lady in Music on Site’s production of Die Zauberflote, Miss Todd in The Old Maid and the Thief with Chicago Summer Opera, La Cercatrice II in Puccini’s Sour Angelica and Zita (cover) in Gianni Schicchi with Music on Site, Ramiro in La finta giardiniera by Mozart and Alma in Adamo’s Little Women with Chicago Vocal Arts Consortium working with director Rose Freeman and conductors Cathy O’Shaughnessy and Alex Enyart. She proudly presented a solo recital at CCPA, where she collaborated on works by Purcell, Mozart, Wolf, Chasson, Pasatieri and more.
During her time at Belmont Univeristy pursuing her undergraduate degree, Ms. Wheeler performed the roles of Lola in Douglas Moore’s Gallantry, The Conductor in Pasatieri’s La Divina, and Mother Jeanne in Dialogues of the Carmelites. As a chorister, she sang with the Belmont University Chorale as they toured Italy performing in churches such as Santa Maria di Montesanto in Rome and the Church of San Salvador in Venice, singing Italian and Latin church music and African American spirituals. Her participation in this choir also allowed her to perform at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, TN in her school’s yearly production of Christmas at Belmont, televised on PBS.
A native of the Hoosier State, Ms. Wheeler worked at the Indianapolis Opera as the Patron Relations Associate, which gave her exposure to the nuts and bolts of the industry. She has used these experiences to distinguish herself as not only a performer, but as well rounded musician committed to preserving and protecting the art form most dear to her heart.
Hannah also has a passion for recital work. She has developed and performed multiple recitals specifically to give back to friends, family, and her community to promote classical music in an area where such works are seldom heard or performed.
She was recently awarded the Victoria Livengood Award of Distinction (2023) for her preparation, progress and performance.
Ms. Wheeler finished her Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in May of 2018, where she studied with Allan Glassman and has worked with teachers, coaches and directors, such as Thomas Studebaker, Beth Parker, Shannon McGinnis, Scott Gilmore and Andrew Eggert.
